| Text | [a letter from a correspondent in Lebanon, Ky.] The Brown Stockings of Louisville played the Stars of this place on the 5th inst., and defeated them by a score of 24 to 1, and on the following day they beat them by a score of only 10 to 8. On the last day their regular catcher, Kraus (who was so used by in a game at Danville that he could not play), acted as back stock, and he was seen by at least twenty responsible persons to change the ball—it was supposed that he had a live ball—and when the Browns were at the bat, to throw it back and let them bat it, and when the Stars came to the bat to throw out the dead ball (which it was understood the game should be played with). He was caught in the first game in assisting the catcher when the Stars were running bases. We deem our first defeat owing in a great measure to the fraud practiced, as he is supposed to have used his live ball in that game also. In justice to our boys, I request an insertion of this in The Clipper. Yours with respect., FAIR PLAY. P.S.--It is a certain fact that Kraus had two balls, the one we proposed playing with, and the supposed live ball. The club do not deny that Kraus did this, but deny knowing it at the time.
