Text | “The speedy straight ball will be the successful delivery of the season,” said a well-known pitcher the other day. “You may talk of curves, drops and rises, but give me the swift, straight ball every time, which, if properly commanded, is a daisy. You first put a hot one directly past the batsman’s head, and you can bet that he will get away from the plate. Keep them all close to him and he will not get a good lick at it, and if he does it will either go up in the air or down on the ground. I saw Caruthers pitch a game against the Chicagos in the championship match, and he did not pitch a single curve ball. |
