Text | Batting and fielding averages are valuable indications of the general skill of players, but are not conclusive. Fielders who try for everything will inevitably have lower averages than careful players who will not risk an error to save a base hit, and, similarly, batsmen who surrender the chance of a safe hit to send in a run by sacrificing themselves will be lower in batting rank than “sluggers”who hit certain pitchers safely almost every time, but fail utterly when confronted by a brainy pitcher. |
