Text	...under the swift pitching now in vogue serious injuries must undoubtedly occur unless catchers resort to the use of the protective catcher’s mask, introduced by Mr. Thayer of the Harvard College Club. Among catchers who possessed more reckless pluck than moral courage an absurd prejudice existed last season against the use of these masks; but it is disappearing as fast as the public perceive the value and importance of them as protectors from severe blows in the face. One might as well laugh at fencers who use the wire masks to protect their faces in practice, as to ridicule a catcher for using his mask. They prevented many a black eye and broken nose as well as smashed teeth, last season.
