Text | [Atlantics vs. Athletics 8/31/1868] This gave the lead to the Athletics at the outset by the totals of 7 to 0; and Atlantic stock immediately went down way below par, and some of the Philadelphia admirers began to talk indignantly about the game being thrown, “in order to have a third match”, etc; and, to tell the truth, it did look a little fishy to see them play so indifferently after coming to Philadelphia, too, without Charley Smith. None of the bettors got bit by the operation, if operation it was, very little betting being done, except on the relative figures of the score by which the Atlantics would be defeated, for the success of the Athletics was regarded apparently as a foregone conclusion. |
