Text | [editorial matter] In permitting the introduction of any regular substitute at any period of a game, and in adopting the double umpire system, the New Players' National League has placed itself squarely in advance of the National League and in line with the public demand on at least one important particular. The double umpire system is the inevitable system of the future, and in first adopting it, the Brotherhood men scored a clever point. The Sporting Life November 27, 1889 [N.B. The PL in fact adopted the same substitute rule as the NL. See TSL 12/25/1889] |
