Text | [Athletic vs. Bay City, both of San Francisco 3/21/1880] The Athletic nine is one of the strongest in the League and under the captaincy of Carey the promise is strong that it will not be second at the season's close. To bring the club up to the requisite standing of excellence the strictest discipline is enforced, and any violation of the playing rules is punished by a fine, a second offense subjecting the offender to dismissal. It was remarked yesterday that three of the players took desperate chances to indulge in their favorite cigarette. Taking advantage of Carey's back being turned, and while his attention was being given to the field, those players would take surreptitious draws at the soothing weed and eject the forbidden fumes as spasmodic puffs until their appetite was satisfied. |
