Text	[Athletics vs. Eurekas of Newark 8/27/1866] It was manifest from the start that [Athletics pitcher] McBride and his nine were bent on winning this game if the best of pitching and fielding could do it, to say nothing of batting, which he well knew was their forte; and the “ripping” balls which he sent in at once gave warning to the Eurekas that they had an up-hill and heavy piece of work cut out for them, to save themselves from a disastrous defeat, without thinking of victory.
