Text | [Eckford vs. Maryland 10/6/1869] Martin, the famous slow pitcher, was with the Eckfords, and completely bewildered the Baltimore players by his peculiar style of delivering the ball. It appeared as if the ball, when it quitted his hand, would fall to the ground before reaching the bat, but, on the contrary it went, to the pitcher [sic: perhaps should be catcher?] very swift, and the result was that, instead of the striker forcing the ball down the field, it assumed an upright position, and was easily taken by the Eckford players. |
