| Text | One of the largest salaries ever paid to a base-ball player was that paid John Clapp two seasons ago by the St. Louis Club.Clapp was to meet Messrs. Apollonio of Boston, Bulkley [sic] of Hartford, and Graffen of St. Louis, at Earle's Hotel, New York.He did so, and stated to them that he was on the auction block;that he had a surety offered him of $2,500, and that the club paying him the largest amount over that sum would secure his services.He then left them to make their “sealed proposals,” and the result was that John opened the envelopes in their presence, and said in a moment, “Gentleman, I will play in St. Louis.”The offer accepted was in the neighborhood of $3,000, but what the others were it is difficult to state.Chicago Tribune November 3, 1878, quoting reminiscences of Ed Cuthbert in the St. Louis Spirit. |
