Text	[from a biographical sketch of John Lynch] He commenced the season of 1878 as the short stop of the New Haven-Hartford Club, and, after playing a few games in that position, relieved Arthur Cummings in pitching, first as an experiment in a game at Washington, D.C., and as he enjoyed a remarkable degree of success, it encouraged him to persevere in his new position, and, studying the in-and-out curves, rise and drop deliveries, he rapidly acquired a reputation as an effective and puzzling pitcher.
