Text | [Olympic of Philadelphia vs. Eckford 7/28/1868] They [the Olympics] seemed incapable of knocking the ball beyond the bases, and when they did get it outside it was sent skyward, and of course that the kind the Eckford fielders gobble up. Martin’s peculiar delivery had something to do with this, without doubt. He has never been batted yet by a club that faced him for the first time, and it would be expecting too much, perhaps, to suppose that the Olympics would hit him away. |
