Text | Umpire Shay in the Princeton and Dartmouth match decided that he could not call strikes on balls not struck at which only came over the corner of the home plate. He says they must come over the centre of the plate. He also decided that it was optional with the umpire to call a waist-ball high or low. In both cases he is mistaken. If the ball only comes over the right or left corner of the home-plate an inch, it is a fair ball as far as coming over the plate is concerned, and the rules expressly define what a waist-ball is. |
