| Text | [West Philadelphia vs. Philadelphia 8/6/1874] The pitching of Cummings was as fine an exhibition as we have ever seen. It is a great pity that he cannot always use the same style of delivery, as it is by all means his most effective. It is no wonder that the West Philadelphians could not bat it, as hardly any professional nine would be successful before it. Hicks seconded his efforts superbly, putting out fifteen men, most of these on strikes. Philadelphia Sunday Dispatch August 9, 1874 [Chicago vs. Philadelphia 9/6/1874] Cummings never pitched with greater effect. He made Hicks move about behind the bat, that player retiring no less than sixteen men, counting his assistances.
