| Text | There will be no Cleveland Club in the National League of 1885. the club resigned its franchise on Saturday and the letter containing the resignation reached President Nick E. Young, at Washington, yesterday morning. On Saturday afternoon a part of the eleven players reserved, under the National agreement, were released by telegraphic message, and the remainder were naturally set at liberty by the arrival of the resignation of the Cleveland Club. This was but the natural outcome of the deliberations of the stockholders, and was taken after a thorough endeavor to strengthen the playing team up to the necessary strength to make a winning fight for the championship, and after it was found that there were no local parties who were wiling to share the expense of a losing venture. Cincinnati Enquirer January 7, 1885, quoting the Cleveland Herald 1/6/85 President Young says that Cleveland has formally tendered its resignation from the League, chiefly on account of lack of patronage, and with the understanding that the St. Louis Unions should take its place.
