Mills being now on the third base, detected a baulk on the part of the pitcher, asked judgment, and it being decided in his favor, went home. New York Sunday Mercury September 11, 1859

There was another feature in the game, which was the result of the strong batting, and that was the number of bats broken. “Old Knick” [i.e. the Knickerbocker Club] made the splinters fly on this occasion.
