Text | Among the leading players of 1872, who bear off the palm in their several positions for the best general play, may be named the following: Hicks, of the Mutuals, as catcher; Spalding, of the Boston nine, as pitcher; Start, of the Mutuals, as first baseman; Barnes, of the Boston Club, as second baseman; Ferguson, of the Atlantic nine, as third baseman; George Wright, of the Boston nine, as short-field, and Eggler, of the Mutuals, as centre-field. The other two positions may be said to have been equally well played by Cuthbert, York, McMullin, etc. |
