Text | Pitcher Shreve is at Louisville. He belongs to a Southern family there who think he “degrades himself by playing ball,” just as certain English families think that their sons should do no vulgar work for a living, but simply live idle lives, “like gentlemen.” Shreve, however, has common sense views on the subject, and so plays ball for a good salary.
