Text | [correspondence from Umpire Ben Young] The double umpire system is a beauty. It is not perfection, but the next thing to it. We tried it on the coast here last Sunday, and it worked well. If it is too expensive some arrangement could be made by which the local substitute should have full jurisdiction over second base only. This would increase the cost but very little, but the full-fledged double umpire system is much better. Yet, I doubt, if it will be ever introduced. As it is the umpire is most niggardly paid, and I don't believe two will be engaged. |
