Text	[Eurekas vs. Irvingtons 5/7/1867] The lack of knowledge of the new points of the game was noticeable on both sides. Pitchers left their positions, too, when balls were called, when they should have stayed in their grounds to take the ball, for it is not in play under such circumstances until they hold it while inside the lines of their positions. The same error, too, was committed in reference to balls passing the catcher, and stopped by the crowd; the new rule requiring all such balls to be first held by the pitcher while standing within the lines of his position. Until the ball is so held it is not in play, and the bases can be run with impunity.
