Text	[Picked Nine of New York vs. Picked Nine of Philadelphia 7/2/1862] In the sixth inning, while T. Bomeisler was at the bat, several balls struck him, and on one or two of them the players ran bases. A question then arose as to the liability of the striker being given out for infringing Rule 20 of the laws of the game, which states that “any player who shall intentionally prevent an adversary from catching or fielding a ball, shall be declared out.” This pitcher is required to deliver the ball “as near as possible” over the home base. Few, however, have the requisite command of the ball to do so, and occasionally it must be likely to hit the striker, unless he gets out of the way, and this he is required to do by the above rule.
