Two base ball clubs in Richmond refused to play friendly matches with the Union club of that city, because the latter was composed of Northern men.

The objection was not so much that the Union Club comprised Yankees -Richmond Club president Babcock was a New Yorker after all- but that it comprised Yankee soldiers from the occupation army.  -WCH
