Comment | In a letter to the editor of the Orange Journal, 5/26/1855, the Washington Base Ball Club states they just had their semi-annual election of officers which would mean the club at least dates back to December of 1854, the earliest known record of a New Jersey base ball team. In the issues of 6/9 and 6/16/1855 there is correspondence with a team from "over the mountain" about playing a game of 8 per team. Nothing further has been found. At present, the Washington Club is either the earliest known New Jersey team playing the New York game or the only team in the state organized to play another bat and ball game with the exception of the Camden Club which played Philadelphia town ball.
