| Description | Harrison, "Athletics for all" (a history of sports at Phillips Academy) has a lot on early baseball here. Evidently "bat-ball" games were popular here in 1811.By 1852-53 they were playing "base ball,' but the book suggests this was more like Rounders or MA ball. It was played informally by students, but in 1864, the first class nine was formed. The class of 1865 formed the Resolute club, and in this year the switch was made away from the MA, plugging, game, to the NY game. The 1853 games were played in an open field in the rear of the Seminary buildings. One game was nine players versus eleven, with the nine winning 50-37. The Boston Daily Advertiser, July 23, 1866 has the Lowell Club of Boston playing the Phillips of Andover. |
