Data | “Base-ball” was mentioned by a correspondent writing to a Norwich, Norfolk, newspaper in response to another letter published in the same paper which had complained strongly about children playing games in the streets. The second writer said that it was natural and proper for children to play, and citizens of the city should help make more playgrounds available for them. He added: “No one can blame children for wanting to play, even on Sunday, and unless their desires and the means of gratifying them are helped into a more healthy groove we shall still have the tip-cat, base-ball, &c., in the back streets and squares as much as ever.” |
