Data | “Base ball” was one of the amusements enjoyed by large numbers of bank holiday celebrants from the south London town of Croydon who ventured to rural areas in nearby Surrey. According to a local newspaper: “Picnic parties without number were dotted about these charming resorts, while, wherever suitable places were found, cricket, base ball, quoits, kiss-in-the-ring, and other games found plenty of votaries.” |
