| Data | A newspaper reported that “base ball” was among the amusements enjoyed during the Easter holidays by merrymakers who had ventured to the town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight: “Good Friday was beautifully fine, and the Recreation Field was well thronged by lads and lasses at their favorite amusement--'trap' which includes cricket, base ball, kiss-in-the-ring, &c., &c. These sports during the three days at Easter cause both high and low, rich and poor, to congregate and enjoy the Old English pastimes.” |

| Block Notes | It is not at all clear what the writer meant by stating that “trap” (presumably trap-ball) includes cricket, baseball and kiss-in-the-ring. Given that he put the word in quotes, it may have been his attempt at a pun, perhaps implying that the visitors were trapped by the fun of playing these games. Or not. In any case, he exhibited some democratic enthusiasm by stating that these “old English pastimes” were enjoyed by all levels of society. |
