Data | It was announced that “brace ball” would be among the entertainments at the upcoming annual picnic of the Brighton (East Sussex) Sacred Harmonic Society to be held in Henfield, a town in nearby West Sussex. According to a newspaper report, “a match of cricket is to be played between the married and single gentlemen. Trap, brace ball, and singing, will form some of the amusements of the day.” |

Block Notes | This is one of four examples where “base ball” was spelled “brace ball.” Henfield was (is) friendly territory for safe haven ball games. It sports one of the oldest cricket clubs (1771) and has been a hotspot for stool-ball since the mid-19th century. |
