| Data | The word “base ball” appeared in a criminal case in Battle, East Sussex, where two young men were facing charges from an incident at the Westfield School. According to a news report, a witness stated that “on the day in question, at recreation time, the boys [students of the school] were playing base ball in the playground when a young man and a big boy came along. The ball was knocked down towards the gate and the young man came through the gate, picked up the ball, and kicked it in the playground.” The report went on to say that when the school boys complained, the intruders threw rocks at them, and when the schoolmaster attempted to intervene they threw rocks at him too and also got into a brief scuffle with him. The accused failed to appear in court, but were fined “₤2 each plus costs, or in default, a month's imprisonment with hard labour.” |
