Data | “Bass-ball” was one of the sports enjoyed by a group of 150 adult music lovers at a picnic in Chesham, a Chiltern Hills market town in Buckinghamshire. The unusual event first offered a round of sports and games for the attendees. This was followed by a tea and then by several choruses of Handel's Messiah. A newspaper noted that “In addition to the usual sports upon such occasions, such as cricket, bass-ball, &c., vocal and instrumental music was in requisition.” |
