Description

The website Early Texas Baseball says that in 1872 a team from New Orleans played teams in Dallas, Waco and Austin. On July 4, 1874, the Dallas “Trinities” lost a game to the Denison “Blue Stockings” in Dallas 35 to 33. See Dallas Weekly Herald, July 11, 1874.

The Dallas Daily Herald, May 24, 1874 reports that yesterday a trial base ball club was formed, and a game played "near the eastern terminal of the street railroad." Capt. Wheelock's and Wilkinson's nine played.  This was the Trinity Club, said to be the first in Dallas.

Dallas Daily Herald June 2, 1874 reports that the Trinity BBC will play June 3 "on the old college Grounds, east Dallas." As best can be determined, there was a Dallas Male and Female College at this time, at the corner of Cantegral and Live Oak Sts. The female college had, in early 1874, sold its lands on Elm St. The reference could be to either one of these.

Same July 4, 1874 reports that at the Fair Grounds there will be a baseball tournament, featuring (among others) the Trinities and Mutuals of Dallas. The Fair Grounds were a mile east of the city, adjacent to the Pacific RR, reachable via Elm St. From these descriptions, it appears the fair grounds were at/near modern Fair Park.

Dallas had 3,000 residents in 1870.
