Description | "Later in the year [1858] a Mechanics Ball Club was organized and played a game on the Common with the Olympics of Boston. They were beaten by a score of 54 to 21. Twelve men played on a side." The New York Clipper, April 30, 1859 mentions this club as sending delegates to the state bb convention. Waltham Sentinel, July 16, 23, 1858 announces the formation of this club. "We now have eight to ten cricket and base-ball clubs in the town" which play on the Common. Waltham had 6,397 residents in 1860.
