Description | Such a match between Barre and Hardwick, also in 1848, ended in discord. In reviewing one incident, the report notes that “talley-men [scorekeepers] were stationed . . . near the 1st goal. [O]ne . . . moved his station to the 2d goal. . . . [T]he Hardwick side had two of their best players on their 2nd and 3d goals[.]“ Here, goal is synonymous with base. And yet, rather than specify a specific game, the Barre account again uses a generic name, “game of ball.” |
