Description | The Springfield Illinois State Register, May 30, 1866, reports that "yesterday" in Jacksonville the Hercules (college) club beat the Hardin Club 78 to 42. Jacksonville is the home of Illinois College. Rammelkamp's Illinois College, p. 279, claims that Linus C. "Line" Chandler (1846-97), a future Harvard graduate, introduced the game at the college in the 1865-66 year. |
