Description | The Gay Street Baseball Grounds are mentioned in the Knoxville Press and Herald, Oct. 1, Nov. 17, 1868. Spiro's Bakery, Fitzgerald's Saloon and the L. David Confectionary are all said to be opposite these grounds (same, May 13, 1869, Oct. 10, 1869, May 25, 1870). The Knoxville Whig, Dec. 9, 1868 hints that these grounds are on Gay, around where Maine and Cumberland intersect Gay. This suggests that the grounds were about where the First Horizon Bank now is. |

Comment | William Hardy suggests the original grounds were on the easts side of Gay, around the 400 block, on land owned by the McClung family. The lot was bounded by modern Gay on the west, Union (south), State (east) and Summit Hill Drive (north) Samuel B. Dow, recollecting years later (Knoxville Sentinel, Nov. 20, 1921) says the Gay St. grounds were located about where Woodruff Hardware was in 1921. And that the Holston Club grounds were on Jackson Avenue. Edit with form to add a comment |
