Description

Matteson was incorporated in 1889. Around this time Elliott's Park (at the corner of modern Route 30 and Kedzie Avenue) became a fashionable amusement park and picnic grounds for Chicagoans.

The Chicago Tribune, July 12, 1891, reporting on the annual picnic of Chicago Freemasons at Elliott's Park: "G. M. Moulton's scrub baseball team won the $50 prize from W. H. Reed's nine by a score of 15 to 10. The Woodlawn Park ball nine beat a picked nine 14 to 6..."

According to Jaenicke's "Matteson" (2006), p. 73, organized baseball teams started in Matteson around 1910. In 1900 Matteson had a population of 449.
