Description | The Rock River Democrat, May 31, 1865: "Base Ball. The young men of this city are forming an association in ye ancient game of base ball. The association is to consist of not more than thirty members and will be called the Forest City Base Ball Club." Morris, "Baseball Pioneers" says the club actually formed June 7, 1865. The Rockford Weekly Register Gazette, June 10, 1865, report this club just formed. The Forest City lost to the visiting Empire of Freeport 55-21 on "Monday". Freeport Weekly Journal, Aug. 2, 1865. They played in the Set. 19/20 1865 tournament in Rockford, losing to the Atlantic of Chicago 26-20. The Rockford Weekly Register-Gazette, Sept. 30, 1865, reports that the Forest City beat the Sinnissippi 55-17 for the county championship, and gives a box score. The Forest City Club of Rockford IL is listed in Peverelly [1866]. Rockford IL is about 80 miles NW of Chicago. It had 8,246 residents in 1865. |
