Description | The Chicago Tribune, Oct. 27, 1869, reports that the "Farwell nine" of Chicago beat the Crown Point, IN base ball club 35-34 at Crown Point Monday last, even though the Farwells played a man short (8 vs. 9). The Chicago Times, June 23, 1869, reports on a 6/22 game between the Dry Goods team (formed from the employees of Field & Leiter and the Farwell Co.) and a team from the local "National Banks," won in 7 innings by the former 33-12. Presumably this was a company nine sponsored by the wealthy Farwell family, Chicago dry goods merchants. A Farwell & Co. nine defeated the Field Lieter & Co. nine 52-36 in 1869, in a game between dry goods merchant companies. See Chicago Inter Ocean, Aug 29, 1869. |
