Description | The Ottawa Free Trader, May 23, 1885, reports that on Monday evening last, in Peru, a baseball club was formed. Jno. D. Cahill, president, M. Driscoll, Captain, first nine. This club may be the "Browns" of Peru, who lost to the Streator Reds 3-2 "last Sunday" (same, July 25, 1885). Peru and La Salle are "twin cities" on the Illinois River. Peru was a heavily German town (47% German foreign-born in 1870) and perhaps this is the reason why baseball was slow to come here. |
