Description | The Hempstead Texas Countryman, Oct. 2, 1868: "Base Ball Club--a number of our young men, headed by Mr. John Peebles, Marcus Groce and E. Bartley, are getting up a Base Ball club..." The organizational meeting will be this Saturday at Groce's Hall, 7:30. The newspaper had been urging the formation of a club for some time. However, no mention of the club is in the newspaper after Oct. 2. It is possible the club didn't get organized--but it is evident base ball was played here in 1868. Bib Marcus Groce (b. 1850) was the son of prominent merchant Leonard Waller Groce. John Peebles (b. 1849) was the son of the towns' founder, Dr. Richard Rodgers Peebles. |
