Description | The Dodge City Times, May 6, 1877 gives a full report, and box score, of a game between the Clippers of Fort Dodge, and the Dodge City Club, at Fort Dodge, the latter winning 19-15. Dodge City players were Garrison, Morphy, Leonard, Cowdrey, Vines, Willett, Ronan, Lender and Hadder, with P. L. Beatty as scorer. Most of these men can be identified. William N. Morphey was a local attorney Fred J Leonard ran a restaurant, and was on the city council J. D. Cowdrey ran the telegraph office Charles N. Willett was a cattle inspector "Major" Charlie Ronan ran a saloon and was a noted gambler G. E. Hadder owned a dry goods store P. L. Beatty owned a restaurant and was a township trustee. As can be seen, the players were respectable citizens. |
