Description

A meeting of the “Antelope” Base Ball Club was held last evening and ten new members admitted. The work goes bravely on, and we hope this club is now fully and permanently organized. They will play their first game next Tuesday on their grounds in the Addition, east of McGee street.

-Kansas City Daily Journal of Commerce, July 26, 1866

Yesterday being the regular day for field exercise, the “Antelopes” played another game of base ball. They are visibly in this manly sport, and will soon “hold their own” with some clubs of much longer standing. Below we give the game, as taken from the scorer's book...

They will play another game on Friday. We understand they play a match game with the “Hope” club September 7th, and we look for quite and excitement among base ball players.

-Kansas City Daily Journal of Commerce, August 15, 1866

The Kansas City Star, June 4, 1908, ran a reminiscence article headlined: "We had a great team in '66. The Antelopes then were the pride of the base ball fans." The Kansas City Journal, Oct. 22, 1893, lists the Antelopes as the first baseball club in that city.

The Kansas City Times April 13, 1964 reports that the Antelope Club was organized July, 1866 with attorney D. S. Twitchell as president. [BA]

Kansas City MO's 1860 pop. was about 4400, and its 1870 pop. was about 32,250.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
