Text

"While researching the Olympic Base Ball Club of Paterson for the pioneer project today, I found in the Paterson Daily Press of August 2, 1867 a detailed account of a game of 'old fashioned base ball' between 'two select elevens who never played the modern game.'   What I thought was especially interesting is the following:

'In the old game, it will be remembered, there is a first base about a rod to the right and a little toward the front of where the batter stands; the second base is about twenty rods in front of him, in the centre of the field; the home base is about ten feet to the left of the batter.  The person running must be put out by being hit with the ball when he is more than a pace from his pace, etc.'

"I found this on microfilm at the Rutgers library while there I printed out a clearer copy of the Newark Evening Courier article about the 1869 town ball game which I will try to send out tomorrow to those who asked for it."

Warning

The year/years being recalled by the men -- and their ages when seeing (or playing) the old game -- are not specified, and are somewhat arbitrarily assigned here as the 1850s.   This is done to ensure that the details are not lost to future scholars

Comment

From  a 19cbb post by John Zinn, Aug. 9, 2008: 'This is only one of about a half dozen accounts of 'old fashioned base ball" games in Paterson in 1867. The games typically lasted six innings with eleven on a side."
