Description | This game appears on the Protoball Games Tabulation [WNY Table] compiled by Craig Waff. It was reported as "the first match ever played by Clubs from the United States and Canada." in the Buffalo Morning Express on August 18, 1860. Clifton NY is no longer found near Buffalo. Perhaps it was the former name of a section of the city. Buffalo is sometimes called the Queen City. Clifton Heights is on Lake Erie SW of Buffalo. Note: Joseph Overfield also notes that the Buffalo NY team called the Queen Cities played a team from Hamilton, Ontaria in August 1860, and says that it was the first international contest played by the National Association rules. Joseph Overfield, The 100 Seasons of Buffalo Baseball (Partner's Press, 1985), page 17. Overfield does not cite his source. |
