The Coles County Historical Society website has a list of early games in the local newspapers. The first game listed for Charleston was played Aug. 25, 1882, with Charleston playing Paris (IL).

The Clark County Herald, Sept. 19, 1882 says the Eclipse of Marshall defeated the Clippers of Charleston 17-14 at Casey. Other issues that month mention the Clippers.

Charleston is in Coles County. Undoubtedly, baseball was played there prior to 1882.
