Description

The U.S. established a listening and communications post in the old Italian colony of Eritrea, in 1943. The post, in the capital Asmera (aka Asmara), was later known as Kagnew Station. By the early 1950s, and probably before, the American personnel stationed there were playing baseball and/or softball. By 1962 at least the base had a Little League team.

It is probable that baseball was played by US servicemen here, and/or at Massawa the Eritrean port city, during World War II (c. 1943). See the website of the Kagnew Station veterans, http://www.kagnewstation.com/history/chapter4/index.html

By the 1960s at least (and probably prior to this) the local Eritreans were invited in to play ball. See Sandra M. Chait, "Seeking Salaam: Ethiopians, Eritreans, and Somalis in the Pacific Northwest"
