| Description | The U.S. established a listening and communications post in the old Italian colony of Eritrea, in 1943. The post, in the capital Asmera (aka Asmara), was later known as Kagnew Station. By the early 1950s, and probably before, the American personnel stationed there were playing baseball and/or softball. By 1962 at least the base had a Little League team. Eritrea is found between the northern border of Ethiopia and the SW coast of the Red Sea. It became an independent nation in 1993.
It is probable that baseball was played by US servicemen here, and/or at Massawa the Eritrean port city, during World War II (c. 1943).
