Description | Challenge issued by "the Barre boys" to teams in six nearby towns for a series of matches of "a grand game of round, or base-ball." A prize of $100 to be awarded to the victor of the series. The other towns were Hardwick, Dana, Petersham, Hubbardston, Oakham, and New Braintree. The challenge was accepted by the team from Baldwinville. The first two games of the best-of-three series were played on the Barre common, on August 11, 1855. There were twenty men on a side, and the game was played according to "one-out-one-out," i.e., when a batter made an out his side was out. In the first game, Barre won with 76 rounds to 17 rounds for Baldwinville. In the second game, Barre scored 33 rounds, then the game was broken up when players from Baldwinville became dissatisfied with decisions of the umpire. |
