Description

"The beginnings: Champaign in the 1850s and 1860s" (1960) p. 35: "The Prairie Club of Champaign was organized in April 1867, with P. Van Horn, president; H. G. Gary, vice-president; George S. Scroggs, secretary; and W. S. Maxwell, treasurer."

Scroggs was probably George Scroggs (1842-80), later editor of the Champaign Gazette, State Representative, Lt. 125th IL Infantry.

The Champaign Union, April 11, 1867 reports that this club formed Tuesday, with Pierson Van Horn as president.

Champaign was incorporated in 1860. It had 1727 residents that year, 4625 in 1870.
