Location Freeport, IL, United States
Modern Address Freeport High School
Description

The Empire Club grounds were described as "east of the fair grounds" (Freeport Journal, Oct. 4, 1865). The old fair grounds, described as being on "Lincoln Ave.," were sold in 1867 and new fair grounds purchased on Walnut St. (same, June 27, Oct. 2, 1867).

"Lincoln Ave." is today's Lincoln Blvd. After reviewing old maps, the Empire grounds would be near where the city cemetery now is (902 W. Lincoln). East and a bit south of the cemetery entrance on Lincoln is the Freeport High School, said to be about the site of Camp Scott, a Civil War training camp which utilized the fair grounds..

An image of Camp Scott is in Harper's Weekly, June 15, 1861. Soldiers played base ball while in the camp. See Chronology, 1861.38.
